Kensuke's Kingdom

This is the book we have chosen to work with year six students.
It is obviously the longest and most complicated story to read of all the stories we have seen here, but it is a fascinating story with huge potential.
This book can be used to work many different topics like history, biology, geography... and to do so in a way that is creative, engaging and satisfactory for our students. They can learn about different parts of the world (some may be familiar, others may be totally unknown to them, they can learn about turtles or sharks,we can make our own survival kit in case we are shipwrecked on a deserted island... There are numerous activities that can be developed from the things Michael has to go thrugh.
In our case, we have decided to make two triplines, one for the journey described in the story and another one with our ideal trip around the world. We have used tripline.net to make them:

The Owl who was afraid of the dark

The true story of the Three Little Pigs

Lazy Jack

The Drop Goes Plop

The very hungry caterpillar

This story allows us to continue developing our learners readings skills in a progressive way. This story introduces more complicated words, more high frequency words, numbers, word families...
Here we have the word families that can be found in this book: word families

We can continue or work with words (their pronunciation and meaning) making use of word walls: word wall activities.

Also, thanks to this story children can learn the life cycle of a butterfly: life cycle.

This can help them to learn how to sequence stories:

Fat Cat on a Mat

This is a very appropiate story to work with year one students because of its vocabulary and grammatical structures. It is mostly made up of short, one syllable words, so it is a good way to make children become aware of the different types of syllables.
We can use this book to teach how to read easy, short words as well as some high frequency words.

Here, there is a table with the words on the story: Fat Cat syllables
